Definition

The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) is a collaborative initiative that develops guidance and methods for organisations to assess pressures on nature, prioritise places and issues, set targets and act in line with ecological limits and societal goals.

Overview

What it means in practice

SBTN translates nature science into a target-setting process. It is designed to help users assess impacts, prioritise locations, measure a baseline, set targets and take action.

Why it matters

Climate targets can often use a common emissions unit; nature targets must also account for ecosystem type, condition, pressure and location. SBTN addresses that additional complexity.

Boundary note

SBTN is distinct from the Science Based Targets initiative and from TNFD. The organisations are related within the wider sustainability ecosystem but perform different functions.

Review board

Comment on a specific line. Each reviewer stays separate until an editor accepts a merged draft.

1Separate reviewer cards

Each person comments on the definition or overview in their own draft card, with role, evidence and suggested wording kept together.

2AI comparison

AI can compare comments against the current text, flag conflicting claims, surface missing evidence and identify where reviewers agree.

3Editor synthesis

An editor merges compatible suggestions into a draft change, checks sources, records disagreements and decides what can be published.

You can still save a draft, but completing these items makes editorial review faster. Multiple reviewers can suggest changes on the same text. Editors compare, merge, accept or decline them before any public change.
