Science-based targets were created to reverse the usual logic of corporate planning. Conventional targets often begin with current performance, available capital and an improvement rate management believes it can deliver. A science-based target begins elsewhere: with a temperature goal and the emissions pathway consistent with it. The organisation then works backwards to determine its share of the required reduction.
The Science Based Targets initiative translates global and sectoral pathways into criteria and methods for companies and financial institutions. The result is not a single universal percentage. The required trajectory depends on the target boundary, base year, sector, emissions scope and method.
Absolute contraction may be appropriate for one company; a sectoral pathway or physical-intensity approach may be more decision-useful for another.
The word “science-based” can nevertheless be overread. Validation shows that a target meets the applicable criteria at the time it is assessed. It does not prove that the organisation has a credible transition plan, sufficient capital, effective governance or a record of delivery. A well-designed target can coexist with weak implementation.
Conversely, a company may be reducing emissions rapidly before its target has been externally validated. The most consequential question is therefore not whether the target carries a label. It is whether budgets, procurement, product design and executive incentives have been reorganised around the pathway.
Scope 3 targets are especially revealing because their delivery depends on supplier relationships, product choices and purchasing practices—not merely operational efficiency. Targets also age.
Pathways, standards, organisational boundaries and emissions data change. Acquisitions, divestments and improved inventories can make the original baseline less representative. A science-based target must therefore be maintained as a management instrument, not framed once and displayed indefinitely.
Practical application
Record the selected method, pathway, base year, boundary and exclusions. Translate the target into annual operating milestones and capital decisions. Recalculate where structural changes or material data improvements make the original baseline misleading.
Why it matters
The label disciplines ambition by tying it to an external climate objective. Its value is lost when validation is treated as the achievement rather than the beginning of implementation.
Common misconception
A validated science-based target proves that a company is on track. It proves that the target design met stated criteria; performance still requires separate evidence.
