Earth system boundaries
The Earth Commission's 2023 extension of planetary boundaries, adding justice criteria — limits that avoid significant harm to people as well as Earth-system stability.
Expert review openNo editor-accepted expert review yetDefinition
Earth system boundaries are a set of quantified biophysical limits published by the Earth Commission in 2023 (Rockström, Gupta and colleagues, Nature) that extend the planetary boundaries framework by distinguishing safe boundaries — which maintain a stable, resilient Earth system — from just boundaries, which minimise significant harm to humans and other living beings. Quantified across climate, biosphere, freshwater, nutrient cycles and aerosols, the framework found seven of eight safe and just boundaries already transgressed; the just climate boundary (1.0°C) is stricter than the safe one (1.5°C).

Overview
What it means
A scientific floor-and-ceiling for sustainability that builds equity directly into Earth-system limits, designed for translation into targets for cities and companies.
How it is used
The boundaries inform science-based targets for nature (SBTN) and climate, and frame the "safe and just corridor" between minimum resource access and biophysical limits.
Why it matters
They are the state of the art in operationalising planetary boundaries with justice — the scientific counterpart to frameworks like the Doughnut.
Review
Public comments appear only after editor acceptance. Draft comments stay in the review queue.
Reviewers choose the definition or an overview paragraph, leave a comment or replacement, and attach evidence or a source link.
Editors compare reviewer cards side by side. AI may help find agreement, conflicts, unsupported claims and possible source issues.
Only an editor-accepted synthesis changes the public page. Reviewer identities are shown only with consent and verification.
Submitted reviews stay private until accepted.

Review board
Comment on a specific line. Each reviewer stays separate until an editor accepts a merged draft.
Each person comments on the definition or overview in their own draft card, with role, evidence and suggested wording kept together.
AI can compare comments against the current text, flag conflicting claims, surface missing evidence and identify where reviewers agree.
An editor merges compatible suggestions into a draft change, checks sources, records disagreements and decides what can be published.
