In ecology, the maximum population size of a species that a given environment can support indefinitely without degrading the resource base — conventionally denoted K in logistic population growth models, where growth slows as the population approaches capacity. Applied to humans, it refers to the population supportable by Earth's ecosystems at a given consumption level, a debated and contested extension.

What it means
In textbook ecology, populations approaching K show density-dependent regulation; overshooting K triggers decline or dieback as resources deplete.
