Biocapacity
The capacity of an area's ecosystems to regenerate the biological materials people use and absorb associated waste — the supply side of the ecological footprint accounts.
Definition
The regenerative capacity of ecosystems, measured by the Global Footprint Network in "global hectares" — biologically productive hectares with world-average productivity. Biocapacity accounting quantifies how much biomass renewal an ecosystem (a country, region or the planet) provides, for comparison with human demand on it, which is measured as the ecological footprint.

What it means
The metric makes human–nature scale comparisons concrete: with about 12. 2 billion biologically productive hectares and 8. 2 billion people, Earth offered roughly 1. 5 global hectares of biocapacity per person in 2025 — while average footprints exceed that, meaning aggregate demand outruns regeneration ("ecological overshoot").
Areas are scaled by relative productivity so that cropland, grazing land, fishing grounds and forest can be summed.
How it is used
National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts (based on UN data) underpin Earth Overshoot Day and country-level ecological deficit/reserve analysis. Governments and analysts use the accounts to track biological resource security; critics question aggregation choices, particularly the treatment of carbon absorption land.
Why it matters
Biocapacity supplies the "budget" side of sustainability accounting: without a measure of regenerative supply, claims about living within planetary means remain rhetorical. It links biodiversity, land use and consumption in one ledger.
Definitions and controversy
The footprint/biocapacity methodology is contested among ecologists (carbon-uptake land dominates the footprint; productivity scaling assumptions); the entry presents it as the specific metric of the Global Footprint Network rather than a universal measure.
