Ashcrete
A low-carbon concrete in which fly ash — a by-product of coal combustion — replaces part or most of the Portland cement, cutting embodied emissions and diverting industrial waste.
Definition
A concrete that substitutes fly ash for a substantial share of the Portland cement in the mix. Fly ash, rich in silica and alumina, acts as a supplementary cementitious material; in some formulations it is alkali-activated to form a geopolymer binder, allowing very high cement replacement. Replacing clinker-based cement reduces embodied carbon roughly in proportion to the substitution rate.

How it is used
Fly ash concretes are used in general construction, mass pours and infrastructure, valued also for durability and workability. The approach depends on a shrinking resource: as coal plants close, quality fly ash becomes scarcer, driving interest in alternative binders, reclaimed ash and calcined clays.
Why it matters
Concrete is the most-used human-made material; cutting its cement content is one of the fastest available routes to lower construction emissions while valorising a waste stream that would otherwise go to landfill.
Definitions and controversy
"Ashcrete" is not a standardised technical term — it appears mainly in industry and green-building communication; the standard terminology is fly ash concrete or high-volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete. Performance trade-offs (slower setting, supply variability) and the material's coal-industry origin are debated.
