Definition
The Water Framework Directive, Directive 2000/60/EC, establishes a framework for protecting inland surface waters, transitional and coastal waters and groundwater in the EU. It requires member states to manage water at river basin district level, prevent deterioration, and achieve good ecological and chemical status for surface waters and good quantitative and chemical status for groundwater within set deadlines.
