UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)
The 2007 UN declaration codifying Indigenous peoples' collective rights — self-determination, lands and resources, and free, prior and informed consent.
Definition
UNDRIP is the UN General Assembly declaration adopted in 2007 after more than two decades of negotiation, setting out the minimum standards for the survival, dignity and wellbeing of Indigenous peoples. Its 46 articles affirm rights to self-determination; to own, use and control traditionally occupied lands and resources; to maintain cultures, languages and institutions; and — most operationally significant for sustainability — to free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) on measures and projects affecting them and their territories.
