Social Sustainability
Transformative Learning
Learning that changes how people see the world, not just what they know — the learning theory behind education for sustainability.
Definition
Transformative learning is the process, theorised by Jack Mezirow, by which adults critically examine and revise their frames of reference — the assumptions, values and perspectives through which they interpret experience — producing deeper change than the acquisition of information. Triggered often by "disorienting dilemmas" that existing frames cannot explain, it proceeds through critical reflection and dialogue toward new, more inclusive and discriminating perspectives.
