Sustainable Web Design
Designing websites and digital services to minimise energy use and data transfer — efficiency and sufficiency applied to the internet.
Definition
Sustainable web design applies efficiency and sufficiency principles to digital products: lightweight pages (compressed images, clean code, caching), green hosting powered by renewables, dark-mode and efficiency-aware interfaces, and questioning data-heavy features — autoplay video, tracking scripts, endless asset downloads — that multiply energy use per visit. With the internet's electricity demand estimated at several percent of global consumption and growing, page weight has become an environmental variable.
