Overview

Sustainability is not a badge awarded to an activity. It is a test of whether its benefits can endure without consuming their own foundations.

The most widely used word in this book is also the easiest to empty of meaning. Sustainability is attached to products, companies, farms, finance, packaging, cities and lifestyles. It often signals that something is preferable to an alternative. That may be useful communication, but preference is not the same as sustainability.

Irrigated agriculture over the High Plains aquifer in the United States illustrates the difference. Groundwater helped create highly productive farming across a vast region. Yet the U. S. Geological Survey reports that water levels have fallen by more than 100 feet in some areas and saturated thickness has been reduced by more than half in others.

The system can remain productive in the present while consuming the resource base that makes future production possible. Productivity is an outcome. Sustainability is a judgement about the trajectory and its foundations.

The concept is rooted in continuity across generations. The Brundtland Commission described sustainable development as meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Sustainability applies the same logic more broadly: what must be maintained, for whom, over what period, within which ecological and social limits, and with what distribution of costs and benefits?

Those questions prevent sustainability from becoming a permanent status. A farm, product or organisation is not made sustainable once and for all. Conditions change. Soil can recover or decline, water can become scarce, markets can undermine livelihoods, technologies can shift impacts elsewhere and new evidence can alter what responsible practice requires.

Sustainability is a continuing performance question, not a certificate of completion.

Time is only one boundary. Geography matters too. A factory can reduce its direct emissions by outsourcing energy-intensive production. A country can protect forests while importing commodities associated with conversion elsewhere. A farm can improve water efficiency while total extraction from the watershed continues to rise. The focal activity looks better, but the wider system may not.

Credible sustainability analysis checks for displaced burdens and rebound effects.

The concept also contains a difficult debate about substitution. In a 'weak sustainability' view, losses in natural capital may be acceptable if they are offset by gains in manufactured, financial or human capital. A 'strong sustainability' view holds that some ecological functions are not meaningfully replaceable once critical thresholds are crossed.

Money cannot recreate an extinct species, a stable climate or a depleted aquifer on the timescale a community needs. The practical implication is not that no trade-off is ever permissible. It is that organisations must identify which foundations are critical and cannot safely be exchanged for another form of value.

Distribution is equally important. An activity can generate net economic benefit while imposing pollution, displacement or dangerous work on groups with little power. Aggregate value does not make the outcome sustainable for those bearing the harm. The word therefore carries an ethical judgement as well as a technical one: whose needs count, who decides what must endure and whose losses are treated as acceptable?

This is where the distinction between activities and outcomes becomes decisive. Installing efficient equipment, training farmers, publishing a policy or buying certified material may contribute to sustainability. None proves it. The claim requires evidence that resource use, ecosystem condition, livelihoods, rights and resilience are moving in a direction that can be maintained.

An activity is sustainable only in relation to the outcomes and system it affects.

Measurement must therefore begin with explicit boundaries and a time horizon. What resource or function is at risk? What baseline and threshold matter? Which indicators show the condition of the underlying asset, not only the efficiency of the current activity? Who is included in the assessment? What happens if production grows? A reduction in impact per tonne can coexist with an increase in total impact.

The word sustainability remains valuable precisely because it forces these questions to be considered together. It becomes weak when used as a general adjective for good intentions. It becomes useful when treated as a disciplined claim about endurance, limits, distribution and evidence.

Practical application

Before describing a programme or product as sustainable, an organisation should complete the sentence: sustainable in relation to what, for whom, at what scale and over what period? It should identify the critical natural and social foundations involved, the outcomes expected, the thresholds that cannot be crossed and the evidence needed to test whether burdens have been displaced.

Reporting should separate improvements from conclusions. A 20 per cent reduction in water use per unit is an efficiency result. Whether water use is sustainable depends on total withdrawals, recharge, competing users and future climate conditions. The claim should be no broader than the evidence.

Why it matters

Sustainability is the integrating judgement behind every other term in this volume. Without clear boundaries and evidence, organisations can celebrate improvements that prolong an unsustainable trajectory. Used rigorously, the concept reveals whether current value is being created by preserving, rebuilding or consuming the conditions needed for future value and wellbeing.

Common misconception

Sustainability is often treated as a positive status reached through compliance, certification or relative improvement. These may provide evidence of progress, but sustainability is a continuing judgement about whether valued functions can endure within ecological and social limits. Better is not automatically sustainable.

Connections

The previous chapters have examined capacities, practices, ecosystems, information, livelihoods and governance. Sustainability asks whether their combined outcomes can endure. Sustainable development then adds direction: how societies can improve human wellbeing while preserving the conditions on which future wellbeing depends.

A question worth asking

When your organisation calls something sustainable, can it state the resource or function being sustained, the boundary and timeframe of the claim, the people included, and the evidence that current benefits are not being financed by future loss?
