Definition
A solid oxide electrolyzer is an electrolysis device operating at high temperatures (typically 700–850 °C) using a ceramic solid oxide electrolyte to split steam into hydrogen and oxygen. Because part of the energy is supplied as heat rather than electricity, SOECs can achieve the highest electrical efficiencies of the main electrolyser families (alkaline, PEM, solid oxide), especially when integrated with industrial waste heat; they can also co-electrolyse steam and CO₂ to produce syngas for e-fuels.
