State assertion of control over natural resources — nationalisation, export restrictions, higher state takes — to capture more value domestically.

Definition

Resource nationalism is the assertion by states of greater control over natural resources within their territory, through instruments such as nationalisation, higher royalties and taxes, export restrictions or bans, local processing requirements and renegotiation of contracts. It typically rises with commodity prices and with political pressure to capture more value from the country's own resources.
