Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)
The standard metric for data centre energy efficiency: total facility energy divided by IT equipment energy, with 1.0 as the theoretical ideal.
Definition
Power usage effectiveness is a ratio metric, developed by The Green Grid in 2007, expressing data centre energy efficiency as total facility energy consumption divided by IT equipment energy consumption. A PUE of 1.0 would mean all energy powers computing with none lost to cooling, power conversion and other overhead; modern hyperscale facilities achieve values around 1.1–1.2, while older facilities may exceed 2.0.
