Power-to-X (P2X)
Converting electricity — ideally surplus renewable power — into other energy carriers: hydrogen (power-to-gas), synthetic fuels (power-to-liquid), chemicals or heat.
Definition
Power-to-X denotes technologies that convert electrical energy into other energy carriers or products. Principal pathways include power-to-gas (electrolytic hydrogen, or synthetic methane via methanation), power-to-liquid (synthetic hydrocarbon fuels from hydrogen and captured CO₂), power-to-chemicals (ammonia, methanol) and power-to-heat. The concept enables storage of variable renewables and decarbonisation of sectors that cannot be directly electrified.
