Port Electrification
Electrifying port operations — especially connecting berthed ships to shore electricity — to cut emissions and air pollution in port cities.
Definition
Port electrification is the replacement of fossil-fuel-powered equipment and energy use in ports with electricity, encompassing shore power (or cold ironing) that lets berthed ships switch off auxiliary engines, plus electrification of cranes, yard vehicles and harbour craft. Shore-side electricity can virtually eliminate a ship's at-berth emissions where the grid is clean.
