Mycelium Composite
Materials grown by binding agricultural waste with fungal mycelium into foam-like shapes — compostable alternatives to plastic foams for packaging and insulation.
Definition
Mycelium composites are bio-based materials produced by inoculating a substrate of agricultural residues (such as hemp hurds or straw) with fungal mycelium, which grows through and binds the particles into a solid within days; the material is then heat-treated to stop growth. The result is shock-absorbing, insulating, fire-resistant and fully compostable.

Overview
What it means
The material is grown, not manufactured: production is low-energy and can be carbon-neutral, and feedstocks are waste streams. Products include protective packaging replacing expanded polystyrene, insulation panels and design objects, and end of life returns nutrients to soil.
How it is used
Start-ups supply compostable packaging to brands replacing plastic foams; the approach features in circular economy good-practice platforms and bio-based material research.
Why it matters
Mycelium composites demonstrate the grown-materials paradigm — turning waste into high-value, biodegradable products that close biological loops.
Review
Public comments appear only after editor acceptance. Draft comments stay in the review queue.
Reviewers choose the definition or an overview paragraph, leave a comment or replacement, and attach evidence or a source link.
Editors compare reviewer cards side by side. AI may help find agreement, conflicts, unsupported claims and possible source issues.
Only an editor-accepted synthesis changes the public page. Reviewer identities are shown only with consent and an editorial decision to attribute them.
Submitted reviews stay private until an editor decides whether to accept and attribute them.

Review board
Comment on a specific line. Each reviewer stays separate until an editor accepts a merged draft.
Each person comments on the definition or overview in their own draft card, with role, evidence and suggested wording kept together.
AI can compare comments against the current text, flag conflicting claims, surface missing evidence and identify where reviewers agree.
An editor merges compatible suggestions into a draft change, checks sources, records disagreements and decides what can be published.
