Methane is the main component of natural gas and a powerful greenhouse gas. It remains in the atmosphere for roughly a decade before chemical reactions remove it, but its warming effect per tonne is much stronger than carbon dioxide over shorter time horizons. Major human sources include fossil-fuel production and distribution, livestock digestion, manure, rice cultivation, landfills and wastewater.

Because sources differ, solutions range from leak detection and equipment replacement to feed, manure, rice-water and waste management. Methane accounting is challenging. Emissions can be intermittent and concentrated in “super-emitter” events that inventories based on average factors miss. Satellite, aircraft and continuous-monitoring technologies increasingly reveal gaps between reported and observed emissions.

The short atmospheric lifetime creates an opportunity.

Rapid methane reduction can slow near-term warming and improve air quality because methane contributes to ground-level ozone. It cannot replace carbon dioxide reduction: stabilising long-term temperature still requires net zero carbon dioxide. Agricultural methane requires particular care. Livestock systems support livelihoods and food security, and interventions can shift land, feed or equity impacts.

Intensity improvements may reduce methane per unit while herd growth raises absolute emissions. For practitioners, methane should be reported separately as well as in CO2e. Absolute tonnes, source category, measurement method and both near- and long-term interpretation help avoid hiding a fast-acting gas inside one aggregate number.

Practical application

Build source-specific inventories and prioritise direct measurement where emissions are variable or concentrated. Establish rapid response for detected leaks. In agriculture, track absolute and intensity trends and assess livelihood and land-use effects.

Why it matters

Methane reduction can deliver relatively rapid climate benefit and often recover saleable gas or reduce waste. Aggregated CO2e alone can obscure its timing and source uncertainty.

Common misconception

Reducing methane can compensate for continued carbon dioxide emissions. It can slow near-term warming but does not remove the need for deep carbon dioxide reduction.
