Material Flow Analysis (MFA)
A systematic method for quantifying the flows and stocks of materials within a system defined in space and time, based on the mass balance principle.
Definition
Material flow analysis is a systematic assessment of the flows and stocks of materials within a system defined in space and time (Brunner & Rechberger, 2004). Applying the mass balance principle — inputs equal outputs plus stock changes — it tracks materials from extraction through production, use and disposal. Economy-wide MFA compiles the total annual material throughput of national economies in tonnes per year.

Overview
What it means
MFA makes "social metabolism" visible: where materials enter an economy, where they accumulate in buildings and infrastructure, and where they leave as emissions and waste. It generates indicators such as domestic material consumption and circularity rates.
How it is used
Used for national resource accounts (Eurostat, OECD), waste management planning, critical raw material tracking and circular economy monitoring; results are often visualised as Sankey diagrams.
Why it matters
You cannot manage what you do not measure: MFA provides the quantitative backbone for resource efficiency, circular economy targets and decoupling analysis. **Note:** In-batch merges: 1720 and 1722 (MFA duplicates) → this entry.
