Definition

Gross greenhouse-gas emissions are the total emissions within a stated inventory boundary before deductions for removals, carbon credits, avoided emissions or other instruments used to present a net result.

Overview

What it means in practice

Gross emissions show what entered the atmosphere within the stated boundary. Removals, credits and other balancing items should be reported separately so the operating emissions remain visible.

Why it matters

A net figure can fall even when underlying emissions do not. Gross reporting allows users to judge whether the organisation is reducing emissions at source or relying mainly on balancing mechanisms.

Boundary note

Gross does not mean boundary-free. The organisational boundary, scopes, gases, period, methodology and any exclusions still determine what the number represents.
