GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals is a transparent, open-standard method for chemical hazard assessment developed by the non-profit Clean Production Action. It characterises hazard levels across human and environmental health endpoints — prioritising carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, endocrine disruption, and persistent bioaccumulative toxicants — and assigns each chemical a Benchmark score from BM-1 (avoid: chemical of high concern) to BM-4 (prefer: safer chemical), with BM-U where data are insufficient. Its criteria align with GHS, REACH, and international lists of chemicals of concern.

What it means
GreenScreen fills the gap between a regulatory "banned list" and informed design: it lets manufacturers compare ingredients on inherent hazard before committing to them, operationalising green chemistry in product decisions. The List Translator variant rapidly screens chemicals against authoritative hazard lists; full assessments by licensed profilers can also certify chemicals as lower concern.
How it is used
The method is embedded in standards and tools such as Health Product Declarations, Pharos, and corporate restricted-substance programmes in electronics, textiles, and building products.
