Fluorinated gases are manufactured for applications such as refrigeration, air conditioning, fire protection, semiconductor production and electrical insulation. Many have global warming potentials hundreds or thousands of times greater than carbon dioxide, and some persist for very long periods. Hydrofluorocarbons grew as replacements for ozone-depleting substances.

They do not generally damage the ozone layer, but their climate impact led to the Kigali Amendment’s global phase-down. Regulation is also accelerating shifts toward lower-GWP refrigerants and tighter leak management. Inventories often underestimate F-gases because emissions arise from leakage during use, maintenance and disposal rather than routine fuel consumption.

Equipment registers may omit refrigerant charge, top-ups or contractor records.

A procurement decision today can lock in decades of servicing and end-of-life risk. Lower-GWP alternatives are not automatically suitable everywhere. Safety, flammability, toxicity, energy efficiency, ambient temperature and technician competence matter. A refrigerant with lower direct climate impact may still perform poorly if system efficiency falls or leakage increases.

The management hierarchy is practical: avoid unnecessary cooling demand, improve system efficiency, select appropriate low-GWP refrigerants, prevent and detect leaks, recover gases during servicing and ensure responsible end-of-life destruction or reclamation. For practitioners, the climate claim should cover the equipment lifecycle.

Replacing refrigerant without addressing old stock, service practices and energy use leaves material impacts unresolved.

Practical application

Maintain an asset-level refrigerant register with gas type, charge, top-ups, leak history, service provider and end-of-life plan. Include procurement specifications, technician training and recovery evidence.

Why it matters

F-gases can be material despite small mass. Strong asset management can prevent high-impact leakage and avoid regulatory and transition risk.

Common misconception

Switching to any natural refrigerant is automatically safer and lower impact. Refrigerant choice must consider total system performance and safety conditions.
