Most greenhouse-gas inventories are calculated rather than directly measured. Fuel consumed, kilometres travelled, electricity purchased or kilograms of fertiliser applied are multiplied by emission factors to estimate emissions. The factor represents an average or modelled relationship between an activity and the gases released. The apparent simplicity hides several choices.

Factors can be technology-specific, country-specific, supplier-specific or global averages. They may include only combustion or also upstream life-cycle emissions. Electricity factors can represent annual grid averages, marginal generation or contractual attributes. Using the wrong factor can produce a precise answer to the wrong question. Factors also change.

Grid mixes evolve, fuel qualities differ and scientific estimates are updated.

A factor suitable for screening may be inadequate for a public product claim or performance assessment. More detailed is not automatically better if the underlying data do not match the factor’s geography, technology or period.

For agriculture, emission factors for fertiliser, soils, land-use change and methane can carry substantial uncertainty because emissions depend on climate, soil, management and biological processes. Tiered methods allow organisations to move from default factors toward country-specific models or direct measurement, but complexity should follow materiality and decision need.

A factor is not evidence of an actual reduction. Replacing a generic factor with a lower supplier-specific factor may reduce the calculated inventory without any physical change. The change should be explained as better estimation unless operational evidence supports abatement.

The discipline is traceability: retain the factor source, version, unit, boundary and applicability. Without that record, inventories cannot be reproduced or restated when methods improve.

Practical application

Maintain an emission-factor register linked to each source category. Record geography, year, technology, gases, boundaries and version. Establish rules for when defaults may be used and when primary or supplier-specific factors are required.

Why it matters

Emission factors connect operational activity to reported emissions. Poor matching can distort hotspots, targets and claims even when arithmetic is correct.

Common misconception

An official emission factor is accurate for every facility using it. Most factors are averages or models; their relevance depends on the conditions they represent.
