A glass of clean water looks like a product delivered through pipes. Its quality may depend on forests, soils, wetlands, farms, reservoirs, treatment systems and rules operating far beyond the tap. Ecosystem services provide language for those connections: the ways ecosystems contribute to benefits people receive.

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment popularised the definition of ecosystem services as the benefits people obtain from ecosystems. It grouped them into provisioning services such as food and water, regulating services such as flood or climate regulation, cultural services and supporting processes. Later frameworks refined the language to avoid double counting.

The UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounting describes ecosystem services as contributions of ecosystems to benefits used in economic and other human activity.

The distinction between function, service and benefit matters. Nutrient cycling is an ecological process. Its contribution to crop growth can be an ecosystem service. The harvested food and the nutrition it provides are benefits shaped by labour, infrastructure, markets and institutions as well as ecology.

Treating every ecological function as a final service can count the same value several times and obscure human inputs. New York City’s Catskill and Delaware watershed is a widely cited example. In the 1990s, the city pursued a watershed-protection strategy that helped it maintain a regulatory waiver from filtering much of its drinking water supply.

Forests, soils and streams supported water quality, but the outcome was not “free nature” replacing infrastructure.

It required a 1997 agreement, monitoring, land protection, wastewater upgrades, farm programmes, regulation and continuing negotiation with watershed communities. The case shows that ecosystem services are co-produced. Ecological condition matters, but so do governance, finance and human management. The people who maintain the landscape may bear costs while distant users receive benefits.

A service assessment that identifies the benefit but not the providers, rights and trade-offs is incomplete. Services also operate at different scales. Shade trees may cool one farm. Upstream vegetation can influence water quality for a city. Forest moisture recycling can affect rainfall across regions. The relevant beneficiary and decision boundary must be explicit.

Otherwise, an organisation may claim a landscape benefit from evidence collected only on its own site.

Valuation can help make dependence visible. Biophysical measures describe flows such as water retained, sediment reduced or pollination supported. Social assessment captures cultural, spiritual and relational importance. Monetary valuation can compare costs or inform investment, but it is not the only form of value and is not appropriate for every decision. The service framing has critics for good reason.

It can imply that nature matters only when it produces a human benefit or a market price. IPBES introduced the broader idea of nature’s contributions to people partly to recognise diverse knowledge systems and relational values. A sacred forest, ancestral landscape or species may matter in ways that cannot be reduced to a service unit. Trade-offs must remain visible.

Increasing timber production may reduce water regulation or habitat. Restoring wetland can limit land available for cultivation. A service to one group may create a cost for another.

Aggregating values can conceal distribution, especially where the people losing access have less political or economic influence. For business, ecosystem services clarify dependencies as well as impacts. A coffee company depends on water regulation, soil formation, pollination and climate moderation even if none appears as a purchased input.

Understanding those dependencies can improve risk management, but the analysis should lead to action: protecting condition, supporting stewards and reducing pressures, not merely assigning a value. Ecosystem services are therefore a decision lens, not a claim that ecosystems exist for people. Used carefully, the concept connects ecological condition to human wellbeing and economic activity.

Used carelessly, it monetises selected benefits while leaving rights, intrinsic value and system limits out of view.

Practical application

Identify the ecosystem, its condition, the service flow, the benefit and the beneficiaries separately. Map who maintains the service, who receives it and who bears opportunity costs. Select biophysical, social or monetary methods according to the decision rather than defaulting to a financial value. Test trade-offs and thresholds.

Ask whether the service can be substituted, whether the substitute transfers harm and whether the ecosystem can continue providing the flow under climate or land-use change.

Why it matters

Ecosystem services reveal dependencies that conventional accounts often treat as free or external. They help organisations understand how ecological decline becomes operational, social and financial risk, and where investment in protection or restoration can create shared benefit.

Common misconception

Ecosystem services are often described as free benefits supplied by nature. The ecological process may not have a market invoice, but maintaining it can require land, labour, rights, governance and foregone alternatives. Someone frequently carries the cost.

Connections

Biodiversity and ecosystem condition underpin service flows. Agroforestry can generate services on working land. Nature-based solutions deliberately use ecosystem functions to address societal challenges. Natural capital describes the stocks from which service flows arise.

A question worth asking

When your organisation benefits from an ecosystem service, does its decision-making recognise the people and ecological conditions that keep that service available?
