The intrinsic property of a substance to cause adverse effects in organisms during exposures determined in relation to the organism's life cycle. In the UN Globally Harmonized System (GHS), chronic (long-term) aquatic hazard is classified into Categories 1–4 based on chronic toxicity data (expressed as NOEC or equivalent ECx on survival, growth and reproduction) combined with degradability and bioaccumulation potential; acute data serve as surrogates where chronic data are lacking.

What it means
Chronic toxicity captures the sub-lethal, slow harms — reproductive failure, growth suppression, population decline — that acute lethality tests miss, which is why the GHS treats long-term hazard as the principal environmental concern.
It pairs with acute toxicity (the existing dictionary entry) across health endpoints too: chronic health classes include carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity and specific target organ toxicity from repeated exposure (STOT-RE).
Because chronic testing is expensive and data are scarce for most substances, classification leans on persistence and bioaccumulation evidence — embedding the precautionary logic that what lasts and accumulates is presumed capable of long-term harm.
How it is used
Regulators assign chronic categories driving labels, restrictions and discharge permits; product stewards screen portfolios against chronic endpoints (PBT/vPvB, CMR); LCA toxicity characterisation factors weight chronic effects; substitution programmes prioritise chronic hazards.
Why it matters
Most chemical damage to ecosystems and workers is slow and cumulative; chronic toxicity is the classification machinery that makes that visible before it becomes irreversible.
