The sustained or repeated absorption of pesticides at doses that do not cause immediate poisoning but accumulate health effects over time. Exposure routes include occupational handling by farmers and applicators, spray drift to rural communities, dietary residues and contaminated water. Documented chronic outcomes include certain cancers, neurodegenerative disease, endocrine disruption and reproductive harm.

What it means
Chronic exposure is the slow counterpart to acute pesticide poisoning — and the harder to govern. Of the 900+ pesticide active ingredients in use globally, the WHO classifies 86 as extremely or highly hazardous (Classes 1a/1b); around 120 substances are widely agreed to be "highly hazardous pesticides" (HHPs) when Rotterdam and Stockholm Convention listings are included.
A 2021 systematic review estimated 44% of the world's farmers experience unintentional acute poisoning annually — each episode marking hazardous exposure that can seed chronic disease. Risk falls disproportionately on farmworkers and developing-country agriculture with weak protective-equipment and poison-centre infrastructure, making it a labour-rights and environmental-justice issue.

The FAO/WHO HHP framework drives phase-out lists and agroecology substitution; certification schemes (Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, organic) restrict HHPs; supply-chain due diligence screens pesticide risk in commodity sourcing; epidemiology links exposure patterns to occupational disease.
