Capacity factor
The ratio of a power plant's actual energy output over a period to its maximum possible output at rated capacity — the key metric for comparing generation technologies.
Definition
A dimensionless ratio (expressed as a percentage): actual electrical energy produced by a generating unit over a given period, divided by the energy it would have produced operating continuously at full rated capacity over the same period. It captures availability, maintenance and — for weather-dependent renewables — resource variability.

What it means
Capacity factor is the discipline metric of energy-transition arithmetic: nameplate megawatts mislead, because technologies deliver very different annual energy per megawatt installed. Typical ranges: nuclear plants operate at the highest factors; thermal plants roughly 50–85% depending on dispatch role; hydropower around 30–70%; offshore wind around 40–60%; onshore wind around 25–40%; solar PV around 15–30%.
These differences determine how much capacity — and therefore capital — a given clean-energy target actually requires, and drive system needs for storage, interconnection and firm low-carbon backup.
How it is used
Energy modellers, investors and regulators use capacity factors in levelised-cost calculations, resource-adequacy planning and project finance; policy targets are stress-tested against realistic rather than nameplate capacity.
Why it matters
Every credible 100%-renewable or net-zero power plan is ultimately a capacity-factor calculation; misunderstanding it is how headline gigawatt figures disguise delivery shortfalls.
