Energy derived from biomass — the largest single source of renewable energy today, spanning traditional firewood to modern biofuels, biogas and BECCS.
Definition
Renewable energy produced from organic material — wood, energy crops, agricultural and forestry residues, and organic waste — converted to heat, electricity or fuels. The IEA distinguishes "modern bioenergy" (efficient, sustainable uses such as biogas, biofuels and modern biomass heating) from "traditional biomass" (inefficient, polluting uses such as open cooking fires). Modern bioenergy is the main source of renewable energy today, accounting for about half of global renewables consumption.

What it means
Bioenergy's strategic value is versatility: it serves heat, power, industry and transport, integrates with existing infrastructure (liquid and gaseous carriers), is storable and dispatchable, and — combined with carbon capture (BECCS) — can deliver negative emissions.
In the IEA Net Zero Emissions scenario, bioenergy meets 15–20% of total energy needs by 2050, implying modern bioenergy roughly triples while traditional use is phased out. Its sustainability is conditional: feedstock sourcing (land use, biodiversity, food competition) determines whether it helps or harms.
How it is used
Sustainability governance runs through criteria in instruments such as the EU Renewable Energy Directive (GHG-saving thresholds, no-go areas for feedstocks, cascading-use principle) and certification schemes. Debate centres on large-scale biomass for power (forest sourcing, carbon-payback timing).
Why it matters
Bioenergy is simultaneously the renewable system's workhorse and its most contested component: indispensable in scenarios for heat, fuels and CDR, yet capable of severe land-use damage if poorly governed.
