Appropriate technology
Technology designed to fit its social and environmental context — typically small-scale, locally maintainable and resource-light — as articulated by E.F. Schumacher in the 1960s–70s.
Definition
Technology suited to the economic, social and ecological conditions of its users: more productive than traditional methods but far cheaper and simpler than advanced industrial technology. E.F. Schumacher called this "intermediate technology" — labour-intensive rather than capital-intensive, using local skills and materials, decentralising, and ecologically compatible.

Overview
What it means
Schumacher developed the idea after seeing advanced technology transfers fail in developing countries, and founded the Intermediate Technology Development Group in 1966 (renamed Practical Action in 2005).
His 1973 book *Small Is Beautiful* made the concept a touchstone of alternative development and early sustainability thinking: production from local resources for local needs, with wellbeing rather than output as the goal.
How it is used
The concept guides design of development tools — from treadle pumps and fuel-efficient stoves to off-grid solar — and informs today's debates on technology transfer, frugal innovation and "convivial" technology. Critics have noted the risk of prescribing "second-best" technology to poor communities, and the movement has evolved towards user-led, market-based models.
Why it matters
Appropriate technology is an intellectual root of sustainable development: it challenged the assumption that progress means ever larger, more centralised, more resource-intensive systems, and it remains the design philosophy behind much appropriate-finance and bottom-of-pyramid innovation.
